Project Description
In September of 2023 Make A Smile Volunteers descended up on Lost Creek, Kentucky. The Lost Creek area had suffered a horrendous flood which took lives, propersty, and livelihoods. Record high flood waters blasted through this prior coal mining town washing away everything before it. People lost their lives. Entire homes were swept away, businesses destroyed.
The people of this town were resilient however, and started the long process of rebuilding. One area that needed attention was the lone park/playground which was located at the local Christian school. Everyone had access to it but the grounds had been severely damaged.
After meeting with local officials, a plan was devised and put into action. In 5 days Make A Smile volunteers, and the local community restored and improved the park. A new playground was installed, new ball diamonds set up with new fencing., a bathroom/storage building rehabbed, and a new sand volleyball court built. Lost Creek now has a great park for the families of the area to use. There were a lot of smiles when we helped officially open the park when we were finished!
